About OpenConvert

OpenConvert is a growing collection of free utilities that do one thing differently from almost everyone else: they run entirely in your browser. When you compress an image, convert a PDF, or extract text from a scan here, the work happens on your own device using built-in browser technology. Your files are never uploaded to a server - we never receive them, and we could not see them even if we wanted to.

Why we built it

Most "free online tools" quietly upload your private files to servers you know nothing about. Think about what that means for the kind of files people convert every day: a signed contract, a passport scan, a payslip, a medical document, a personal photo. All of it, handed to a stranger's server to be processed, logged, and sometimes kept. We thought that was backwards.

Modern browsers have become genuinely powerful. They can run image codecs, PDF engines, audio encoders, and even machine-learning models without ever contacting a server. We built OpenConvert to take that capability and turn it into simple, everyday tools - so the convenience of an online converter no longer has to come at the cost of your privacy.

How it actually works

This is not a marketing claim - it is how the site is built. There is no backend that receives your files. Every tool runs in your browser using standard web technology:

You do not have to take our word for any of this. Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and run any tool. You will see that your file is never transmitted. That verifiability is the whole point.

What "private" means here

Many sites say they "respect your privacy" while still uploading your data. For us, private has a precise, technical meaning: your files never leave your device. There is nothing for us to store, leak, sell, or hand over, because we never receive your files in the first place. When you close the tab, anything you were working on is simply gone.

Who makes it

OpenConvert is an independent project, built and maintained by a single developer who cares about privacy and clean, fast software. It is not backed by a large company, and it does not try to lock you into an account or a subscription. It is a small, focused effort that grows one carefully built tool at a time.

How it stays free

The tools are supported by unobtrusive advertising. That is the entire business model - there are no accounts, no subscriptions, no premium tier, no per-day limits, and no upsells. Ads let the tools stay genuinely free for everyone while keeping the privacy promise intact, because the ads never see your files either. You can read exactly how advertising and cookies work in our Privacy Policy.

What is next

The toolset keeps expanding based on what people actually ask for. If a tool you need is missing, or if something does not work the way you expect, telling us is the most direct way to shape what gets built next.
