How to remove a background in your browser

Tips for best results
The AI works best on photos with a clear contrast between subject and background. Portraits, product shots on plain backgrounds, and pet photos work especially well. Very busy or same-colour backgrounds may need a quick cleanup in an image editor.
What runs on your machine, exactly
Most background removers upload your photo to a GPU server. This one downloads the neural network to you instead: on first use, your browser fetches the segmentation model (a one-time download of tens of megabytes, cached afterwards), then runs it locally against your image. The trade-off is honest - the first run takes longer than a cloud service, but your photo never crosses the network, there is no per-image quota, and once cached it works on a flight. The Fast model is a smaller quantized version for quick drafts; Quality runs the full model for cleaner edges.
What it handles well - and what it does not
Strong cases: a clearly separated subject (person, product, pet) against a reasonably distinct background - typical product shots and portraits come out clean, including most hair. Hard cases for any segmentation model, local or cloud: transparent and reflective objects (glass, jewelry), fine mesh and fur against a busy background, subjects that blend into similar-colored surroundings, and images where the "subject" is ambiguous (the model must guess what you meant to keep). Very large images also take proportionally longer since your own hardware does the work. For hard edges you can often help the model by cropping closer to the subject first with the Crop Image tool.
