Where GIF still beats a video file
GIF is technically obsolete - a modern MP4 of the same clip is 5-10x smaller - and yet it survives for one reason: it plays automatically, silently, and loops everywhere, with no play button and no codec questions. That makes it the right format for a handful of jobs: short demos in a GitHub README or documentation (where video embeds do not autoplay), reaction clips in chats and forums that inline GIFs but not video, quick UI bug recordings for a ticket, and email content, since most mail clients animate GIFs but will not play video. If the destination plays MP4 well - social media, messaging apps - upload the video itself and skip the quality loss entirely.
Limitations to know
The format's age shows in two hard constraints: a 256-color palette per frame (smooth gradients and dark footage show banding) and no audio, ever. File size grows brutally with dimensions and frame rate, which is why the practical recipe is: keep clips under about 10 seconds, 480 pixels wide or less, and 10-15 fps. If your source is long, trim to the essential moment first - a tight 3-second loop almost always communicates better than a 15-second one anyway.
